Students Predict Oscar Winner

By David Mohimani –

And the winner is…

The 83rd Academy Awards are on Sunday.

The King’s speech leads the field with twelve nominations including best picture, best director, and actor in a leading role. The Social Network has eight nominations also including best picture.

True Grit, Black Swan, and the Fighter are also nominated for best picture along with Toy Story 3, Winter Bone, The Kids are All Right, 127 Hours, and Inception, but all are a long shot to take home the most coveted award in film.

The battle is really between The Social Network and The King’s Speech. Early indicators have The Social Network winning due to its wins at the Film’s Critic Prize and the Golden Globes.

Some Penn Manor students are hoping for the upset though.

Junior Brandon Schuman thinks that “True Grit” should win because “Jeff Bridges is a hoss,” said Schuman.

After rethinking Schuman decided on Black Swan “It touched the core of my sole,”said Schuman.

“I think Inception should win,” said Junior Mitch Domin.

Junior Alex Cummins agreed with Domin by saying “Definitely Inception it was freaking amazing.”

Surprisingly no students picked either The Social Network or The King’s Speech as the winner.

Best actress is foregone conclusion giving it to Natalie Portman in Black Swan as a ballerina obsessed with being perfect.

The most interesting battle will be for Best Actor. There is an extremely strong class this year. Jeff Bridges(True Grit), Jesse Eisenberg(The Social Network),and Colin Firth(The King’s Speech) are  headlining the group.

National Anthem Becomes Unrememberable

By Chelsea Miller-

Oh say can you see by the dawn’s early… wait, what?  How does that next line go?

Millions of American viewers watched the Super Bowl XLV, on February 9.  As the people in the stadium stood up and took off their hats, they listened to the National Anthem sung by Christina Aguilera. Unfortunately, Aguilera messed up and forget to sing a verse.

In a recent interview with Melissa Telesco, a music teacher at Penn Manor High School,  Aguilera should be ashamed because she is a top singer. Telesco also knows the anthem, since she is a music teacher.

“There’s a lot of pressure with that; if I was singing in front of mad people I don’t know if I would say it right,” said Carly Rebman, a sophmore of Penn Manor.

Christina Aguilera Singing at The Super Bowl

Some people blame her for messing up and some don’t.

“No I don’t know the national anthem,” said Brianna Fisher.

Out of many random students polled at Penn Manor, only a few actually knew all the words to the national anthem. Many students only knew parts of the song. And a few just didn’t know any of it.

Nine out of 19 students didn’t know the national anthem. Out of the 10 students who knew it only 4 could recite the whole national anthem without a problem.

“I personally think you don’t have to know the national anthem,” said Felix Gonzalez.

Paper Towns an Intriguing New Read

By Lauren Pironis

Paper Towns by John Green is a new addition to Penn Manor High School library. The book received the Edgar Award for Best Young Adult Novel in 2009 and reached number five on the New York Times best seller list.

The story is centered around the lives of a group of seniors specifically Quentin Jacobsen, the narrator who weaves an adventurous tale of longing and curiosity.

Paper Towns a new book in the Penn Manor library.

Quentin’s long-time neighbor, Margo Roth Spiegelman, who he is secretly madly in love with, takes him on a one-night adventure throughout their hometown, Orlando. This encounter draws Quentin even closer to the rather distant Margo. However the next day, Margo disappears.

Her disappearance isn’t out of character. She has disappeared before and always leaves clues. Her disappearance leads Quentin and his friends on a very difficult scavenger hunt.

The book is mostly Quentin’s view of Margo and how his opinion of her morphs throughout the book with every clue he finds.

The book is named Paper Towns after a term used to define fake towns printed on maps to find publisher that merely copy other people maps.

This book is very well written and highly recommended.

What Penn Manor Students Think 2011 will Bring

The 2010 spotlight was filled with lots of Snooki, many celebrities getting in trouble with law, The Tea Party, the fashion takeover by leggings and Bret Farve getting caught ‘sexting’.

Everyone’ s curious to see what manic events 2011 will bring. Penn Manor students have some ideas…

http://lightlybuzzed.com/2010/09/a-collection-of-lindsay-lohan-mugshots/
http://lightlybuzzed.com/2010/09/a-collection-of-lindsay-lohan-mugshots/

On the subject of Lindsay Lohan, many students thought that because of her track record in 2010, that 2011 would not be much better.

“I think she’ll get a DUI, and fail more drug tests and just continue to go in and out of jail,” predicted junior Amanda Nolt.

Nicole Harnish, also a junior, said “I’d have to agree that she will repeat the same mistakes, she will definitely keep getting in trouble, but I think she will do something scandalous this year.”

Zach Miller agreed saying “She may die from a drug overdose, and she will definitely go back to jail for more drug violations, she definitely won’t be making a sequel to The Parent Trap this year.”

The world is waiting for you to entertain us Lindsay!

Nothing will kick off 2011 better then the start of the new Jersey Shore season. Especially with a new cast member, Deena Nicole Cortese, who just so happens to be best friends with the infamous Snooki. Students had some predictions about what will happen this season…

www.fanpop.com

” I think Sammi and Ron will break up, and everyone will hate Sammi even more then they did last season,” said Alissa Oktela. ”

“I think someone, possibly Ronnie is going to get kicked out for fighting” forecast senior Julia Rios.

Another show that is expected to be popular also on MTV, is The Skins. This show is written mostly by teenagers that are hoping to speak to American Youth. The show is about the fast life of teenagers and how drugs, sex  and death are becoming way too common.

“I think people will really like it and it will be a big hit of 2011 because teens will really be able to relate to the show,” freshman Alissa Oktela predicted. The show premiers Jan. 19.

On the thought of teenagers, leggings came back into style with a bang in 2010. Will they be just as popular in 2011?

Rios thinks they will.

“They just got popular, but they will stay in style cause I’ll keep wearing them, ha-ha.”

“Also,”  Sarah Tirado said, “They match everything and they are just too comfy to go out of style.”

We will have to wait and see if these students were right about the trendy fashion statement of 2010.

Football was in the headlines last year for Bret Favre’s sexting scandal and the helmet-to-helmet hit rule, which was enforced when rough play brought the injury rate to an all-time high.

Some sportswriters are predicting a player strike or an owner lockout. Either way fans will be disappointed and the networks will lose millions of dollars.

“I hate Bret Favre, I’m so glad that he’s retiring, and as far as the lockout goes, I really think the players should be given a break due to the increased injuries this season,” said Rios.

“My prediction for the 2011 football season is that the Eagles will win the Super Bowl, Go Eagles!” said freshman Taylor Hess.

Only time will tell if the students predictions are right!

Little Fockers at it Again

The Focker family is at it again in the third film depicting the lives of this outrageous family.

In the new installment, Ben Stiller plays a devoted father and husband, Greg Focker, who strives to become the successor of his crazed ex-military father-in-law, played by Robert De Niro. The twist to the new movie is that the Focker family now has twins to look after and their birthday is approaching fast.

While planning the party, the family comes to town including Greg’s parents played by Barbra Streisand and Dustin Hoffman. The mix of the parents and in-laws creates many humorous disasters.

During the movie, Greg also acquires a new work partner, played by Jessica Alba. De Niro suspects foul play and does his own research on the partnership. The comical investigation is sure to get many laughs as he enlists the unintentional help of the twin Fockers.

If you’re a fan of this gut-busting family, then this third installment is a must see. With the humor of all the original characters and the addition of some new, this movie is a definite success.

The movie premiered December 22, 2010. You can see it at Regal Manor 16 and Penn Cinemas to make your own opinion.

Can I get a Fist Pump Please?

“Smoosh” is the new smash for the Jersey Shore cast members.

For the past two years, millions of teens have been taking a trip to the Jersey Shore every Thursday night on MTV at 10 p.m. and if parents are listening closely enough, they may hear some new and shocking vocabulary their teens are learning from the program.

Since MTV is mainly a teen network, it is safe to say that most of people watching the show are teens.

According to MTV.com, Jersey Shore is bringing in 2.7 million more viewers than the hit show Teen Mom.  In fact, of all cable shows, Jersey Shore was ranked second out of twenty-five, only under the ESPN Monday night football and right above Nickelodeon’s iCarly.

In essence, Jersey Shore has become the “talk” of the town.  So the question is, is this new hip teen show affecting the way teens live their lives and their vocabulary?

“It doesn’t influence me to act a certain way, but it might influence younger kids who watch it,” said Penn Manor senior Moriah Freeman.

When the show first premiered, it was all about meeting new people and having fun on the Jersey shore.  This past summer, the show in Miami was all about drama, drinking and sex.

In the hopes of starting fresh in the second season, the Jersey Shore characters Ronni, Vinny, Pauly, Mike, Sammi, Nicole and Jeni came to the new house to find more drama, more alcohol and more sex.

The first issue to come about and upset the house was former cast member Angelina, who left the show early the previous season, showing up for some additional fun.

With Angelina there last season, it definitely brought more problems within the house.

Vinny and Angelina had both openly expressed their hate for one another, or what they thought was hate.

After Vinny calling Angelina “the Statin Island dump,” and Angelina saying, more then once, how ugly Vinny is, they certainly found themselves in the smoosh room.

This fires up Nicole because she claims that Angelina “smooshes” or tries to “smoosh” every guy that she does.

The “smoosh room”, or “the community sex room,” was created from an extra bedroom for when the girls or guys in the house bring home a date they met.

After the boys get their “GTL” on (gym, tan, laundry), they come back, relax and then…T-shirt time!

Then it’s time to party. The cast member have found themselves at multiple clubs in one night.

The guys were the ones who mostly came back with the “smoosh partner.”

Of course the majority of the scene is cut out, but the young kids, teens and even some adults watching might take this show a little too seriously.

“Smoosh” has become a popular word in everyday life.

“I don’t think it influences anyone but it definitely makes the show interesting,” said senior Kristi Rineer.

“I think it’s stupid how people think it’s OK to act that way,” said senior Livie Stoltzfus.

“Smoosh was added to my vocabulary,” said senior Brock Kauffman.

Those who are against it, are strongly against it and those who love it, won’t miss a Thursday night.

With another season about to start, this makes us think… what is next?

Jersey Shore is Back, Tanned and Ready For Action

Get comfy kids, turn on your TV’s, and get your bowl of popcorn. MTV’s Jersey Shore is back.

This Thursday, the popular reality show is airing its third season. After spending the last season tanning in Florida, the housemates return to New Jersey to live in their original Seaside Heights home.

All Jersey Shore members are returning for another takeover except one. Angelina “Jolie” Pivarnick, 25, has decided not to be a part of the new season.  Pivarnick bailed early during both the first and second season due to confrontations with the rest of the house.

The Jersey Shore cast is back for another season on MTV.

To replace Angelina, MTV has cast a new member, Deena Nicole Cortese. Deena originally sent in an audition tape for the first season that aired in 2009. She wasn’t chosen, but Angelina opened the door when she left early in Miami.

Deena had the opportunity to watch the show while the rest of the cast lived it. Her appearance on the third season was a shock to all of them but her best friend Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi. The surprise causes problems right away and those problems will be featured in the premier.

This season is sure to bring just as much drama as the previous two. The first episode of Jersey Shore Season Three will air Thursday January 6 at 10:00 pm.

Christmas Movie Favorites, Are They Classics or New?

It’s a Wonderful Life, The Little Drummer Boy, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, all popular classic Christmas movies. Elf, Jingle all the Way, The Polar Express, popular new Christmas movies.

It’s hard to say which movie is Penn Manor’s favorite and which new Christmas movie will become a future classic.  There is no real answer since students have many opinions.

Penn Manor students were handed a list of the “most popular” Christmas movies out there.

The list consisted of National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, The Nightmare Before Christmas, A Christmas Story, White Christmas, It’s a Wonderful Life, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, A Charlie Brown Christmas, A Christmas Carol, The Little Drummer Boy, Miracle on 34th Street, The Polar Express, Jack Frost, Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, Elf, Jingle All The Way, The Santa Claus, Frosty the Snowman, and Home Alone.

Fifty percent of the Penn Manor students asked about their favorite Christmas movie said that A Christmas Story was their favorite. Others voted the top movies being Jingle All The Way, Elf, Home Alone and The Nightmare Before Christmas.

Senior Cory Lentz said his favorite movie is Elf.

“Will Farrell is the man. The best part is when he’s in the mall and sees Santa then yells, ‘Santa!'” said Lentz.

“A Christmas Story is my favorite. The best part is when Ralphie beats up the bully and he curses, then gets his mouth washed out with soap,” said junior Joey Jackson. “I think its funny and weird to have a Christmas movie with a young kid. It makes the story line different.”

Senior Jere Vital claims to have two favorite movies.

“Jingle All The Way, which I have on VHS tape, and Home Alone are my favorites. (In Home Alone) I always felt like that kid, Kevin. I thought I could take out the bad guys. My favorite part in Jingle All The Way is when Arnold Schwarzenegger’s character gets in the red turbo man suit and flies around saying, ‘It’s turbo time,'” said Vital.

Edward Gahring, a sophomore at Penn Manor, agrees with Vital in claiming his favorite movie being Home Alone.

“Its exciting to watch. The funniest parts are where the little kid is always fooling the adult. The best part in the whole movie is when the old man comes in and knocks out the bandits with the shovel in the flooded house,” said Gahring.

Both sophomores, Kaitlyn Thomas and Cobi Kremer, say their favorite movie is A Christmas Story because its funny.

Thomas remembers the part in which the boy licks the pole and his tongue gets stuck, and Kremer remembers the shoe/hooker leg lamp.

“It makes me laugh,” said Kremer.

A movie becomes one’s favorite because there are parts of the movie that stand out to them and make it memorable. Some families watch the same movies every year as tradition, and some have other traditions.

Taylor Hager, another sophomore at Penn Manor, said that she has watched The Holiday every year since it first came out (in 2006).

Many people still disagree though about which movies are better. Newer ones or classics?

Home Alone is predicted to be a Classic. Photo credit to http://www.allstarpics.net

“Older ones are so much better,” said Jackson.

“I like old ones better. There’s nothing better than an old, good movie. New ones try and pack in too much stuff,” said Gahring.

“The classic 90s colored movies are the best,” said Vital.

Others argue that new ones are better.

“Newer ones are better. Old ones are so fake,” said Thomas.

“I like the pictures in newer movies, so they’re better,” said Kremer.

Hager explains how she likes a good mix of new and old movies.

Whether they like the new or old, which new ones will become the classics?

Jackson, Gahring, Thomas, and Kremer all insist that Home Alone will become a classic.

“It never gets old,” said Thomas.

Miley Cyrus, the Newest Falling Child Star

As the Hollywood star takes a hit of the bong, does she think about the nightmares that might come up if the video is released to the public eye? Will she think about the plethora of kids who consider her their role-model? No. She seems to care more about smoking Salvia, a legal but hallucinogenic drug, to help celebrate her 18th birthday, than her once squeaky-clean image.

Miley Cyrus is at it again.  Horrifying her parents, shocking fans, making parents rethink Hannah Montana completely.

Her father, the 90s country heart throb, Billy Ray Cyrus, posted on Twitter once he saw the video, “Sorry guys. I had no idea. Just saw this stuff for the first time myself. I’m so sad. There is much beyond my control right now.”

While the young Cyrus is up to her antics, students and staff at Penn Manor seem to be as disappointed in her as her parents.

“I would never let my daughter look up to her as a role-model anymore,” assistant principal, Eric Howe said.

“Miley Cyrus is supposed to be a role-model for young children,” senior Melissa Martin explained, ” This was a horrible thing for her to be taped doing and I hope she gets in a lot of trouble.”

In the past couple of years, Miley has gone from being the perfect role-model for the younger generation to just the opposite. Since she started growing into an adult, she’s changed dramatically from the icon of wholesomeness as a Disney Channel star that many parents had been happy their children looked up to.

“If I had kids, I would let them look up to Hannah Montana, but Miley Cyrus is a different story,” senior Leah Freeman said, “but then again nobody’s perfect.”

Miley has proven to the population that she is growing up. She’s pole danced during her performance in the 2009 Teen Choice Awards, she sent around pictures of her being scandalous to her, at that time boyfriend Nick Jonas, she took pictures for a magazine with her dad and some where she was only wearing a shear sheet, she gave a lap dance to her director of The Last Song, and now she has the video of her taking hits from a bong.

“I think if you are that famous, you should be more careful about what gets out,” junior Joey Jackson said.

“People like controversy because that’s what sells,” said Cyrus in her interview with Bazaar Magazine about her pole-dancing incident at the Teen Choice Awards.

“My job is to be a role model, and that’s what I want to do, but my job isn’t to be a parent,” said Cyrus during the interview. “My job isn’t to tell your kids how to act or how not to act, because I’m still figuring that out for myself. So to take that away from me is a bit selfish. Your kids are going to make mistakes whether I do or not. That’s just life.”

Junior Marc Summy has never seen the video, but said, “it will tarnish her reputation she had as Hannah Montana.”

The Disney channel star is definitely not living up to the perfect little girl she portrayed in the show.  It remains to be seen how this will affect her career.
